🎤 Hi, сould you introduce yourself?

My name is Gifty Metuge, known as Gigi Metuge and I am a cybersecurity intern in training going through a career change from Software/web development. I am 22 and of Cameroonian origin. Worked in Dubai for the last 2 years before moving to Nigeria to start a tech portal to enable Africans have access to free tech courses and training.

🎤 What are you working on?

Currently working on growing my portal called GM Portal which can be accessed at mygigionline.comwhere we provide access to free tech educational courses for Africans and also transitioning from development to cyber security.

🎤 What work experience do you have?

I have worked in web and software development for the last 4 years starting as an intern for a Nigerian company where I worked remotely while I lived in Cameroon and then moving to Dubai for the last 2 years of my career as a junior software developer.

🎤 How did you get into your field?

I got into Tech when I first heard about Uopeople few years ago which was a tuition free online university accredited in the USA where I could take a computer science degree and only pay exam fees. I had some interest on how the web works so I tricked my mom into giving me the application money and when I got accepted with a full scholarship for exam fees are really jumped at the offer and started from there.

🎤 What is your technology stack?

I use a lot of different languages because during team projects we have had to learn something new inorder to enable us work together. My favorite are Dart, CSS and Java.

🎤 Describe your first project and what is your role in it.

My first project role was to create a gaming software for an NGO in Nigeria where people could pay a small fee to play and the proceeds will go to the NGO and it was a very small project and was a spin the wheel game where winners could get NGO merchandise in return and support the cause.I was flown out to Nigeria and worked on this for 2 weeks and it was the first time I left my country and I didn’t even tell my parents and I was kind of nervous but it was a starting point for me and it really built up my professional confidence.

🎤 What difficulties did you encounter along the way?

The difficulties I have faced is mostly resources to fly out to conferences, trainings and workshops because these are very important for career development and networking but other than that things have been okay because I belong to very supportive associations like the Google Women Techmakers, Anita Borg’s Systers, the WomenTech Network and many more.

🎤 What tips would you give to someone wanting to break into tech?

I will tell them just go for it if it’s your passion because there is a lot of free resources on the internet and organisations to help you every step of the way.

🎤 What are your career aspirations?

I aspire to own a Cyber Security organization one day committed to fighting off cyber bullying especially amongst African women.

🎤 What IT books, resources, and blogs do you read and recommend to others?

I really do not have the time to read due to work load but every now and then I scout Alison, Udacity, Coursera and Edx for course contents to update my skills in relevant topics.

🎤 What’s the best way to keep up to date with what you're doing?
